TunesDay Takeover // Arunav Sarkar

TunesDay Takeover // Arunav Sarkar

It’s been a while since I’ve solicited friends for a TunesDay Takeover session, but I figured it was about time to bring it around again.

This week’s TunesDay playlist comes from my good high school friend, Arunav.

Whenever I’d see him or meet up with our high school friends, I’d always give him a hard time for only playing house/dubsteppy music, but he has evolved and thrown in some chill DANKK BEATZ.  I’m thoroughly impressed.

Boy has got some guhhhreat taste in music…and if you tell him that he’ll probably love you forever and give you his first-born child.

I hope this TunesDay Takeover recalibrates your mind and lets you feel calm, even if only for 2.785 minutes, or however long this playlist lasts.

Until next time,
Christina (and Arunav too, I guess)

This week’s playlist is a medley of pop and dance pop beats with feisty womxn singers.

It starts out a little more mellow, but the playlist works its way up in energy, then back down, then up again, just like how my mood is right now.

I woke up early, was a bit tired, got energized from starting my day with some pals, and now am feeling a bit slow…but it’s definitely because of the benadryl I took. My allergies are going a little haywire today, but hopefully my energy will pick up because I’m conducting two interviews for my podcast today! YAY! So exciting.

In the meantime, this playlist will keep me from falling into a deep, allergy meds-induced slumber.

Happy listening, folks!

This week has kept me insanely busy, but that’s nothing really new.

Today, my friend, Lili, invited me onto her radio show, Where’s The Chase? It’s a fun talk show about dating and relationships–why she asked me on again…I have no idea.  But, it’ll be cool to chat about how I relate to friends in relationships and me being ready for a serious relationship (cue the shock & awe).  Her show is on KUCI 88.9FM for those in Orange County.  But, you can listen online here.  I’ll be on from 4-4:30PM PST!

And in other news…

Tomorrow, I am launching my podcast, Seats At The Table!! I am way super excited to finally be sharing this with everyone.  But, in preparation for the launch, I decided to have an impromptu launch party at the behest of my friend, Meymuna.  So, I’ve been frantically cleaning my apartment and rearranging furniture, because of course that’s a great idea the day before you’re hosting people at your apartment.

It’s become an intensive spring cleaning of sorts, but it feels good to dust and physically clean the clutter out of my life.

I’ve lived in this place for about two years, and I’m just finally getting around to making it home-y for myself…three months before I’m leaving California.  I have the worst timing, but better late than never, right?

Anyway, I hope that you can tune in tomorrow to Seats At The Table.  It’ll be available on Soundcloud and I’ll launch on iTunes in the next couple of weeks after I have more sessions uploaded.

And now, to the music, which is probably why you came here in the first place.

This week’s playlist is a soothing mix that lowers my heart rate, because to be honest, my mind is moving so quickly and I need to take some time for myself to be present and focused.

What are some songs that help you relax?

Sending you all peace and inner calm,
Christina

Okay.

Before you get all dramatic and say, “Christina, what happened to TunesDay? You left me hanging for two whole weeks!” Let me explain.

I HAD IT ALL PLANNED OUT.  I set up a whole month of TunesDay Takeovers. But, unfortunately it didn’t pan out.

This is what happens when I give people very loose guidelines and don’t follow-up with them.

So, from the bottom of my heart, I profusely apologize to the approximately 8 people who listen to my playlists on a regular basis.

I’m back in the US of A, so you can count on me to crank out some hip n’ happenin’ playlists. For those interested, I’ll probably write a good, old reflection about my time abroad in Greece, but until then, let your petite lil’ ears feast on this week’s playlist.

You know when you try to get your life together, but something is always in the way and it’s not really within your power to change whatever that thing is?

That’s how I feel about this week’s TunesDay.

Soundcloud was down for an entire morning.  I had my playlist all sorted out in my head, but the Soundcloud server was getting all wonky and stalled my plans for the day.

So, by the time you hear this week’s playlist, the day will be mostly over, but that’s okay.

It’s okay.

I’m telling myself it’s okay, so it will be.

Aside from the hiccup this morning, my life feels like it’s moving so quickly…I mean, it’s the end of February already! Pretty soon I’ll be off to a Ph.D. program and moving away from California.

It’s so scary for me to think about, but I think I’m ready–or hoping I’ll be ready by the time August rolls around.

In the meantime, I’m just trying to take advantage of each day and absorb the beautiful & amazing community of people I have around me in California until I embark on my next adventure.

In that spirit, this week’s playlist is comprised of some really cool and groovy local artists from LA, San Diego, and the OC.  A huge thank you to my pal, Jessica, who introduced me to Gavin Turek.  I’m way into her stuff and I highly recommend checking out the rest of her music on Spotify or Soundcloud.

…I really hope that wherever I land next has an innovative music scene…

Hope that this playlist helps you send off February 2017 in the best way possible.

Sending you love & light,
Christina

Happy TunesDay, friends.

I genuinely hope your Tuesday has gotten off on a more productive note than mine.

In typical Christina fashion, I’m attempting to do four tasks at once and being unsuccessful at finishing any one of them in a timely manner, including this very blog post.

I need to remember to take a breath and try to tackle things one at a time–much easier said than done for someone like me whose mind moves many miles a minute (that was a tongue twister, wasn’t it?).

How do you keep focus? I’m willing to try whatever tips y’all have!

In the meantime, I’ll be listening to this week’s playlist and trying to drown out all the extra noise in my head.

wishing you focus & clarity,
Christina

It’s been a long weekend for me–one full of emotional inner turmoil and questions about what my future holds & what life I want to lead.

If you want to read about my cuh-razy emotional rollercoaster a lá California Adventures theme park, continue on.  If not, skip down to the playlist and GET YOUR VALENTINE’S SELF-LOVING GROOVE ON.

This weekend, I had my second experience being a group leader for Hive‘s Global Leader Program, and that led to a lot of inner dialogue about how I interact with new people around me and what being a vulnerable & authentic person really means.

I went through the first two days not really feeling as high energy as I normally am, and for those of you who know me, HIGH ENERGY is my middle name (actually it’s “noelle”, but whatever).  And, I couldn’t really figure out entirely what was happening with me. Was it the energy from the rest of the group that was mellowing me out, or was something deeper happening?  I still haven’t come to any strong conclusions, but I think it was a mixture of the two.  But, I realized that something that’s not high energy isn’t necessarily bad, but just different.  And I need to learn how to be more okay with the silence and listening to what’s happening inside of me.  Figuring out my own feelings makes me incredibly uncomfortable, but there’s a sort of peace within that discomfort that I’m still sorting through.

All I can conclude from this weekend is that although there are lots of improvements to be made within Hive and the program, ultimately the people who make up that community are continuously evolving, and that gives me a lot of hope about our future.

So, TO THE PLAYLIST… At first, I wanted to compile a dance-alone-in-your-room-while-pretending-you-have-a-place-to-go-but-really-you’re-just-staying-home-in-pajamas-and-bingewatching-Broad-City sort of playlist.  But as I was going through my list of possible tunes to mesh together, I couldn’t only use those kinds of songs.  As much as I love the Queen B and jamming out because I am a single lady, compiling something of that nature felt disingenuous to how I’m feeling.

It’s probably because I’m ruminating on all these emotions from the past four days, but Valentine’s Day is so annoying.  Because Valentine’s Day builds up this idea that you have to extravagantly express your love for a significant other on a particular day, but also that romantic love is the only love worth buying heart-shaped boxes of chocolate for.

I know there’s been a popularization of the term Galentine’s Day, in which womxn celebrate their bonds with their other womxn friends, but to only have those two options (expressing romantic affection or solely friendship between the same genders) seems awfully limiting.

That’s what I really love about my time whenever I’m entrenched in the Hive community.  Love really takes all shapes and forms.  Across generations, genders, professional titles, and all sorts of isolating terminologies.

This playlist is an attempt at encompassing the range of emotions I feel whenever Valentine’s Day (and Hive GLPs) come around.  Because I love so many people and for so many reasons, and if I’m being really honest, I don’t think I am missing out that much on not having a romantic partner at this point in my life.  I feel completely and fully whole, which is a really beautiful thing considering my past.  Maybe I’ll feel differently tomorrow (because I’m a human AND I CAN FEEL A RANGE OF FEELINGS AND THAT’S OKAY).  But, for now, I’m content.

Sending you love and joy and a calm heart during this sometimes tumultuous “holiday”.

WITH CONSENTFUL HUGS & KISSES,
Christina

I have a tendency to skip weeks now. Maybe I should make TunesDays an over other week kind of deal this year.

Anyway, hey. Look.  Last week and this week have been nuts.  And I’m not just talking about my personal schedule, but it feels like the world is collapsing in on itself and we’re so frantically trying to hold it together.

I’m trying to find my place in it all.  How should my activism take hold?  What does activism for me even look like?  And I’ve been reading some really great pieces about tangible action items we can all do, but sometimes it just feels hopeless.

The most rational and optimistic part of me says we can persevere–we have for decades, and we’ll continue fighting for equity, in whatever shape or form that might take.  I think for the sake of my own sanity, I have to believe we will survive this.

But, a small, but large enough, part of me thinks, this is it. This is how we end, like the epilogue of a dystopian novel that someone will end up making into a Hollywood blockbuster.

As much as I’d like to believe in progress and the arc of the moral universe bending towards justice, our country has always done its best to hold POC back, and this is just some next-level shit.  I’m hoping that the next couple weeks of digging deep and being actively engaged will help me sort out my own feelings.

Anyway, this week’s playlist is a mix of things.  Listening to these songs have been keeping me afloat in the midst of hearing about friends & family who are terrified and lost.  This fight isn’t over and it’s going to take a lot more than an immigration ban to hold us down. #BanBannon, not Muslims.

This week’s set is a medley of folksy, pop, mixed-up goodness.

I forgot how calming folk and acoustic music can be.  It has been a little while since I actually listened to this kind of music, but it’s been nice to revisit a genre of music that I sort of neglected in the past year.

I find it so interesting to see what types of music we like over the course of our lives.  It’s pretty much a representation of what’s going on in our lives and reflects our outlook.  I’m going to do my best to revisit all the music I’ve loved over the last several years.

Sending you relaxing and introspective vibes,
Christina

Happy TunesDay!

This week’s set is a melding of happy, upbeat, synthpoppy goodness.  Some are new tunes I’ve just stumbled upon and some have been sitting in my “likes” portion of Soundcloud, waiting for their time to shine.  I thought I’d dust some of them off and put them into a little list for your lovely ears!

What are some songs you keep coming back to even if you first heard them years ago?
